Wii will upscale Gamecube games to 480p VIDEO

While we were playing around with the cable we tried loading up a older Gamecube game that supports 480p output in the Wii to see if the Wii would in fact scale the game up to 480p. Watch the video above to see our trial in action. For those of you that can't or don't want to watch the video, the Wii did in fact scale the game up to 480p instead of 480i. When the game was first loaded it asked if we wanted to run it in 480p mode we said yes and the results were positive. There was certainly a difference although not quite as dramatic difference as LoZ: TP has when changing between component and composite but an improvement none-the-less.

Wii Starting up (Gizmodo Vid)

Wii Setup

With the exception of one bit of stupidity on my part, setting the Wii up on my television was relatively easy.

The console comes with that odd grey stand that slants it upward, a little clear plastic thingie you snap on the bottom to make it more stable, the power and AV cables and a Sensor bar.

I was most worried about the sensor bar. Fortunately the thin wire it uses to hook up to the back of the console is fairly long. I decided to hook the thing up to the top of my television and it pretty much blends right in with the TV itself. I'm not a huge fan of applying anything to a $3,000 television with double-sided tape, but at least once it's there it's not obtrusive.

Once I hooked everything up I turned on the Wii for the first time.. and it didn't work. I played around with the remote, I checked the VGA plugs, I tried re-syncing the controller but it just wouldn't let me get past the first screen. Then I realized I had forgotten to plug the sensor bar into the back of the Wii. Doh!

Once the system boots up you have to enter a little bit of info, much like with the DS, but thanks to the Remote, it's pretty quick.

I can't check out the new, weather or store yet, but the rest of the interface feels fairly slick. Moving back and forth between things does have a bit of a learning curve, mostly because there's no routine to fall back on. So often you have to click on an onscreen icon. But I'm sure that's will be easy to adjust to.

November 8, 2006 - Ladies and gentlemen, Nintendo's new generation console is all packaged and ready to roll. The Big N recently released official photos snapped from its North Bend, Washington manufacturing plant that showcase both the anticipated little white system and some of its games gliding down the assembly line. We've grabbed a handful of them for your viewing pleasure below.







We think you'll find this last one particularly enticing. What is it? Why, a heavenly display of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as it makes its way from Nintendo's assembly line and eventually into your hands and hearts.



And finally, just in case you're wondering, it looks like publishers can indeed choose different colors for the Wii discs themselves. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz is blue. But Zelda? You better believe that it's white -- just like the sleek little console.

Exclusive Target Wii DVD for only a penny

Joystiq was checking out the games section of Target today, and we stumbled across a massive display of these Wii DVDs, stuck in the middle of the Wii accessories rack. It looked like a freebie, but the cashier told us it was a penny. Then she boggled at the price on screen and asked a manager. The manager was also puzzled, then shrugged her shoulders and said, "Wow. A penny?" Four dollars later, it was ours (we bought some beef jerky).

What do you expect for a penny? What you get is a white plastic (did Nintendo just get tired of colors or what?) DVD snapcase (hey, that's worth a penny at least), and inside is a disc emblazoned with GAME TRAILERS ONLY -- GAMES NOT INCLUDED. Well, dur. We feel sorry for the poor sap who races home with this thing, and then not only discovers that the Wii won't play DVDs, but they don't even have a Wii because it hasn't come out yet.

Anyhow, it's a nice collection of trailers, behind the scenes videos, and screenshots for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. Check out the doppelgangers from The O.C. in the video after the jump playing Marvel and tossing popcorn around. You too can party like this, just hook yourself up with a Wii and wait for the party to go off the chain. Plus, you'll get to use the line "Hey, wanna check out my Wii?" over and over again.
