Tutorial: iTunes on the Wii (Free)

This tutorial will show you how to stream your iTunes music library to your Wii through the Opera browser. The Opera browser can be download to your Wii for free from the "Wii Shop Channel." This tutorial will work with both a Mac and a PC.

Things you'll need:
*Nintendo Wii with Opera Browser Installed (free from the shop channel)
*iTunes
*MyTunesRss (free)

Let's get started:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.
2. Make sure you have the latest version of the Opera browser installed on your Wii.
3. Download and install MyTunesRss (select your operating system on the right hand side of the page and the download will begin).

Configuring MyTunes RSS (from their page):

1. When you start MyTunesRSS for the first time, it automatically starts searching a file named "iTunes Music Library.xml" in all directories inside your user home. You can cancel this process in case you want to select the file manually or you don't use iTunes at all.

2. To get started you need to configure at least one data source, i.e. either the "iTunes Music Library.xml" or at least one watch folder. The previously found "iTunes Music Library.xml" (if any was found) is already configured. To select your own music library source click the "Directories" tab and under the iTunes box click the "..." button. From here browse to where ever your Library.xml is stored on your computer. I also configured a watch folder. To do so click the "+" button next "Watch Folders" box. Point that window to look at your iTunes music folder.

3. Then you need to do at least one initial database update. Under the "Database" tab you can trigger this update manually or you will have to check the option for doing this automatically when the server starts. You can also configure automatic updates at fixed intervals while the server is running.

4. Now you need at least one user. Go to the user management tab and create a new user. Enter a username and password and check the permissions for the user. You should start with a user with all permissions and no download and zip archive limit. (You will not be able to download music or videos to your Wii...I already tried)

5. After creating the user you can start the server. The server is started and MyTunesRSS checks if it is reachable and if there are any tracks in the database. If your server is up and running, you can test the web interface.

6. Open a web browser on the same computer that is running MyTunesRSS and enter "http://127.0.0.1:8080" in the address line. After a few seconds you should see the login page. Enter the username and password for the user you just created and click the login button. You should see the portal page. MyTunesRSS is working correctly now.

7.Before you leave MyTunesRss click the "Server" tab once more. Next click on the "Server Info" button. When the pop window appears look in the "Internal Addresses" window. Write one of them down (in my case it will be "http://192.168.10.147:8080" - see picture below).

Configuring the Wii:

1. Load the "Internet Channel"
2. Click on the "WWW" icon
3. Enter in the IP address you wrote down in step 8 of "Configuring MyTunes RSS " into the address bar. In my case it was "http://192.168.10.147:8080"
4. Enter the username and password for the user you created earlier and click the log in button (I also clicked "Remember Me"). You should see a portal page. Congratulations you can now stream your iTunes music to your Wii!!!

*I also saved the ip address "http://192.168.10.147:8080" to my favorites and renamed it "iTunes" for easier access. If you chose to remember your username and password earlier, every time you click on your new iTunes favorite item you will be automatically logged into your iTunes library for instant browsing.

Zelda "Ocarina of Time" coming to VC

If you were to look at the top of GameRankings list of best games of all time, heck almost anyone's list, what would you see? Hint, it's coming to the Wii's virtual console on Monday.

That's right, Nintendo just dropped the bomb. Ocarina of Time is coming to the Wii's virtual console in North America too. So there Europe. The game will be on the site Monday for 1,000 points or $10 in real money. Hit the jump for the short but sweet release. Brian Crecente

Every form of entertainment has its artistic pinnacles. On Monday, Nintendo will make The Legend of Zelda®: Ocarina of Time available for download in the Wii Shop Channel of the hot new Wii™ video game system. Originally released in November 1998 for the Nintendo 64® console, the game is widely considered by critics and industry observers to be one of the greatest video games of all time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time inspired millions of players around the world with its in-depth game play, rich 3-D visuals and memorable adventures. It set the standard by which all other games have been judged. And now it's available once again, both for veteran gamers to relive their gaming glory days and for younger players to discover it for the first time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be available for 1,000 Wii Points™ when it goes live at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Feb. 26. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. The Wii Shop Channel now boasts more than 55 downloadable classic games, in addition to the dozens of new disc-based games available for Wii.

Wii: Guitar Hero Coming...

That’s right, during Activision’s conference call on Wednesday, CEO Mike Griffith stated that Guitar Hero will be making it’s way to the Wii:

The key difference in our strategy versus the prior cycle, is that in addition to full support on Sony and Microsoft platforms, we will aggressively target the Nintendo platforms consistent with our multi-platform strategy and Nintendo’s expected growth. In fiscal 2008, we will double our offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero.

No other details were given during the 60+ minute conference call. Since the announcement was given by the President of Activision, I think the chances are high for an official press release in the future. If you wish to hear the announcement for yourself, check out the conference call below and skip ahead to around the 28-minute mark.

Music on your Wii

The social streaming music service, Finetune, has created a Wii friendly interface that looks and works really great. Listen to featured playlists, search artist names or tags on the “radio” and create a profile on a PC and then use the Wii to play your playlist or find similar artists.

The interface is absolutely amazing, one of the best I’ve seen for the Wii browser. From the rollovers to the iTunes 7 like 3D album view.

Wii sports tips

These tips and tricks come from our own observations or items we have found on the ‘net. So check them out and let us know via our Forums new ones you have discovered or if you know any we missed:
Bowling

* If you position yourself far enough to the left and aim towards the opponents lane, you can knock down their pins. If you hit any of their pins it counts toward your score!

# The bowling ball seems to go much straighter if you release it high in the air.
# Change bowling ball color: As The screen is fading to black for bowling, hold down the control pad until it fades to bowling for these colors:

Code Effect
Control Pad Up Blue Ball
Control Pad Right Gold Ball
Control Pad Down Green Ball
Control Pad Left Red Ball

* Scare the crowds while bowling: Start the regular motion for bowling and let go on the back swing. The ball will fly backwards and the crowd will scream and jump.
* Get a Strike on the 91 Pin lane: In training mode you can get a strike on the 91 pin lane by rolling the ball along either the left or right rail all the way to the end. This will trigger an explosion and all the pins will fall down adding 182 (91 * 2) to your score.

Boxing

Here is a list of control motions for Wii Boxing (from GameSpot Forums posting):

High Guard: Hold Wiimote and Nunchuck vertically, then tilt both controllers inward toward your body to cover face.

Mid Guard: Hold Wiimote and Nunchuck parallel to ground, then tilt both controllers inward if still not covering center of body.

Left Dodge: Hold Wiimote and Nunchuck vertically, then tilt both controllers to your left.

Right Dodge: Hold Wiimote and Nunchuck vertically, then tilt both controllers to your right.

Right High Jab: Hold Wiimote vertically, with controls facing yourself, and jerk it forward with the wrist. Helps to keep arm stationary, and just let the Wiimote fall forward.

Right Mid Jab: Hold Wiimote parallel to ground, and jerk downward. Again, keep arm stationary and just push Wiimote downward with wrist.

Right High Hook: Hold Wiimote vertically, with controls facing yourself, and rotate it quickly to the left, as in this (please forgive my ASCII art):

BEFORE:
____
D
A
1
2

AFTER:
___________
D A 1 2

Right Uppercut: Hold Wiimote parallel to ground, and then jerk upward. It’s the exact opposite movement from the Right Mid Jab.

Right Low Hook: Hold Wiimote parallel to ground, but turn it 90 degrees COUNTER-CLOCKWISE so that the face of the Wiimote is looking out to your left, then jerk it in the direction of the face of the controller. It’s exactly like the right uppercut, except the entire motion is rotated to the left 90 degrees.

Left High Jab: Hold Nunchuck up vertically so that the analog stick is facing you, and then jerk it forward. Just like Right High Jab.

Left Mid Jab: Hold Nunchuck parallel to ground, and jerk it downward. Just like the Right Mid Jab.

Left Uppercut: Hold Nunchuck parallel to ground, and jerk it upward. Just like Right Uppercut

Left Hook: Hold Nunchuck parallel to ground, but turn it 90 degrees CLOCKWISE so that the face of the controller is looking out to your right, then jerk it in direction of the face of controller. Basically just like the Right Mid Hook.

* Turn your Boxing Gloves Silver: After you’ve beaten the Grand Champion, Matt, in a boxing match you’ll be able to wear silver boxing gloves. To do so, hold (1) when the screen becomes black before a boxing match.

Golf

* Put better: Press (1) on the controller to see the break of the green and use this to line up your putt. You can also press (2) to get a lower, closer view of the green.

* Play Golf without maps or meters: To disable the power meter, map, and the wind speed indicator, press and hold (2), then make a selection at the “Select a Course” screen.

Baseball

* Pitch Underhand: While pitching, press 2 before throwing. To return to normal pitching press 1

Tennis

* Change the tennis court: To change the tennis court to the blue practice court, press and hold (2) at the warning screen that shows after selecting characters.

* Play Ping-Pong Tennis: You can place yourself on both sides of the net in a single player game and play against yourself, which is quite challenging. In addition, if you’re really masochistic, you can do a 4 player doubles with only you involved.

Wii Sports Time Magazines Top Video Game

WII SPORTS (for Wii)

There is no possible way to say this enough times: great graphics don't make great games. Perfect Dark Zero looked like a Titian, but it was a snooze. Wii Sports—a mini-sports anthology that includes golf, boxing, tennis, baseball and bowling—looks like Colecovision. The little guys on the screen don't even have arms. But it's hilarious, and it shows off the power of the motion-sensitive Wii controller to put you right in the game, sweating and yelling and trying crazy spins and lunges and angles. The tennis game alone is worth the price of admission. Which is nothing, since it comes free with the Wii.

Wii Interview with Reggie Fils-Aime's Nintendo Chief

Critical Hit: Reggie Fils-Aime's Pledge to Nintendo Wii Owners--Read My Lips. 'No New Game Drought.'

In the downslope of Orson Welles' career, the actor-writer-director was less known for his seminal films than for his role as a TV pitchman for Paul Masson Vineyards, wherein he would sonorously intone "We will sell no wine before its time." Substitute games for wine, and he could well have been speaking of Nintendo, whose previous consoles have notoriously gone months between significant first-party games. (Google "Nintendo drought" and you'll get more than 190,000 results.) Now comes word from the U.K. gaming site CVG that two highly anticipated Wii titles-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Mario Galaxy-won't be released until October 2007 at the earliest.

We have no way of determining the credibility of CVG's report, which it attributes to "reliable sources close to Nintendo." But it reminded us of an interview that we conducted with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime in October, where he freely made a "Read my lips" pledge that Wii owners would not endure the same software droughts they had on prior Nintendo machines. Here's our exchange on that point:

NEWSWEEK: Let's look at first-party software for a minute. As evidenced by software sales, gamers who purchase Nintendo platforms do so primarily to play Nintendo-developed games. But from the Nintendo 64-era on, Nintendo has a history of repeatedly delaying key titles, creating long droughts between the AAA games for which its fans bought the hardware. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, your flagship title for the Wii, is in fact a long-delayed Gamecube game that has been moved over to the Wii, as has Super Paper Mario. So how can you assure gamers that are considering a Wii--keeping in mind that they've heard such promises before--that they won't endure the same droughts between AAA first-party titles that they suffered on the Nintendo 64 or the Gamecube?

Reggie Fils-Aime: The way I answer that question is with three very real examples. First, Zelda: Twilight Princess, on Wii, is arguably the best game we've ever made. Period. It is fantastic. It's been essentially made, from the core essence of that game, to be perfect for Wii. And yes, while its development started as a Gamecube title, the fact is the Wii version plays fundamentally different. A consumer can buy the Wii version and the Gamecube version and have two fundamentally different experiences. Now certainly, the Gamecube version of Zelda is fantastic. But the Wii version of Zelda is without peer.

The second example I point out is Metroid Prime 3, which is a from-the-ground-up creation of Metroid for the Wii system. That title is going to come out early in 2007. That will give us fantastic momentum coming off of the launch, and will certainly be an example of how there will be no new game drought for this system.

The third example I would give you is Mario Galaxy, another from-the-ground-up Wii game that we are strategically timing the launch to make sure that we continue driving momentum through 2007. So N'Gai, how do I answer the question, "Will there be no drought," and "How will we make sure that there are fantastic titles for Wii?" The answer is Zelda, Metroid and Mario. Which is a pretty darn good lineup.

So are you willing to make a "Read my lips" pledge right here?

I thought I just did.

All right. I'll be checking in with you when these titles actually ship.

[Chuckles] Exactly.

Nintendo Wii will be getting a Final Fantasy exclusive

Recently Square-Enix has announced the latest installment of Dragon Quest on the DS and it seems like they are giving Nintendo a tremendous amount of support contrary to last gen. But there is even a bigger game that Square will be releasing on Nintendo's home console the Wii, Final Fantasy. From a Square rep. we have recieved a tip that a Final Fantasy is being developed as I type this out. It won't be a sequal to the latest FF's but rather it will be similar to the DS's FF3 and can be said to be a port/remake. This is great news to all Wii owners!

Wii-mote Strap Replacement Program

Nintendo is offering to replace the original version of the wrist straps for the Wii Remote with a newer version. Because Wii consoles shipped starting in early December already utilized the newer version of the strap, you will need to determine which version of the strap you have before ordering a replacement. To view the difference between the original and the new version of the strap, please click here.

If you have an original version of the strap, please complete the form below to get a replacement (also, to ensure you continue to have a fun & safe experience, please read our Safety Information for Playing Wii by clicking here).

Once your replacement wrist strap has shipped, you will receive a confirmation email from Nintendo. We expect to begin shipping replacement straps around December 21st. It will take 5 to 9 days for delivery depending on your location. Please do not contact Nintendo regarding your replacement wrist strap until after that time period has passed.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your interest in our products.
